I confessed Christ as my Lord and Saviour as a sophomore in High School. Having completed college I went directly to law school and then into a civil trial practice in Houston, Texas with the firm of Bonham, Carrington & Fox. It was there I met Katie, a Houston native. We married in July of 1992. My wife and I have five beautiful kids, Andrew, Christopher, William, Lily, and Brooke. My schooling includes a B.B.A. in finance from S.M.U., a J.D. from U.T., a M.Div. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and a D.Min. from Columbia Theological Seminary in spirituality. Before coming to Lubbock, I had served four years as an Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and then eight years as an Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City, Tennessee. Katie and I are both glad to be back in Texas and are thankful for the good people of WPC in accepting and loving us so well.
Born:
Dallas, Texas - 1964
Favorite vacation spot:
With the family – the beach. On my own: remote places in the mountains any time or water (especially from the helm in a sailboat race with lots of boats in my wake).
On your ipod:
My latest book was The Furious Longing of God by Brennan Manning (I highly recommend it). Some books I'm enjoying Oct. 2011 are Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Metaxas, Think by Piper, The Pastor by Peterson, and Chasing Francis by Cron. My go to web site for quiet times is prayasyougo.org. When it comes to fiction, I enjoy action/adventure series like Hornblower, etc. My musical tastes are broad but driving in my car you’ll hear a lot of Stevie Ray, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc. Of course being a sailor type, Jimmy B is always around.
Hobby/activities you enjoy:
My days of competitive sports like hoops and volleyball are over. Nowadays its mountain biking (trail riding out here), sailing, and workout dvd’s. From time to time I’ll break out the tools and do some work on a boat I’m building - don't hold your breath. I do find some fun on my Triumph Thunderbird Sport and I am studying to fly gliders (again, don't hold your breath).
Vision for your role in ministry:
My vision is “making the path clear to a scripture based maturity in Christ.” You’ll find that on my desktop beside a Latin phrase that I will not translate for you here.
Most people don’t know that I am a three time national champion in Tae Kwon Do at yellow (1) and then blue belt (2) in the ATA association. By the time I got my Black Belt I had stopped competing – everything gets old after a while. Also, I’m a descendant of the Scottish clan McDougal – supporters of William Wallace of course. While that connection is most interesting to me, I also am related to Johnny Cash and President Zachary Taylor. Yes, Johnny did have a song and album called "the Baron" but it had nothing to do with me.
